Basketball has been a staple of Las Vegas ever since Jerry Tarkanian and the Runnin’ Rebels took the basketball world by storm. Nowadays, it’s hard to argue against Vegas being the basketball capital of the world.

Aces in Action

The Las Vegas Aces are the newest professional sports team for Southern Nevada to get behind. The Aces moved here from San Antonio, finishing last in the WNBA each of the two previous seasons. The Aces aren’t letting that faze them, however.

With bold moves in the draft, the Aces are betting it all. They selected Washington guard Kelsey Plum in 2017 and South Carolina forward A’ja Wilson. Plum was a dynamite scorer during her 4-year career and holds the NCAA record for points in a career at 3,397. Wilson led her South Carolina team to a National Championship in her junior season as well as being a three-time first team All-American. Add in Kayla McBride, a dynamic scorer who can get a shot off from anywhere and the Aces have a nice core to build around.

While the Aces struggled early on going 1-7 to start their first season in Vegas, the players have slowly gotten more comfortable playing next to one another. As such, they’ve experienced more success; winning 7 of their last ten.

A’ja Wilson was named Rookie of the Month in June when she averaged 21 points and 9 rebounds. Though things are trending in the right direction, a playoff appearance this season may be a bit much too ask for. But, anything is possible. After all, a hockey team from the desert almost won the Stanley cup.

As the young players continue to develop and learn the game, the Las Vegas Aces should be a  perennial playoff contender for years to come. Vegas will be behind them, and if you were paying attention at all, there’s magic with the fans.
