St Louis Blues Playoff Preview; First Round vs. Chicago Blackhawks

With the NHL playoffs now underway, let’s take a look at our 2016 St Louis Blues Playoff Preview.

The St. Louis Blues find themselves matched up against the 2015 Stanley Cup winners, the Chicago Blackhawks, in the first round. Despite the Blackhawks’ success last postseason, the St. Louis Blues actually have a good chance against the defending champions.

The Blues will be without three players to start the playoffs, all out with injuries. Forward Steve Ott is out day-to-day with a colitis injury, center David Backes is day-to-day with a lower body injury and right wing Troy Brouwer is listed day-to-day with an undisclosed injury.

One thing the Blues will have to overcome this postseason is their poor playoff history. In the past three seasons, the St. Louis Blues were sent home after the first round. If they can find a way past their lack of mental toughness, they can have a shot to finally make it to the second round.

A major key to the Blues’ solid play will be their goaltender, Brian Elliott. Elliott had a terrific season this year, posting a .930 save percentage (NHL leader)  and 2.07 goals-against average (NHL runner-up). However, he will have to get past his disappointing postseason play, where he only has a save percentage of .897. That number might not be good enough to get past a Chicago Blackhawks team.

With a lot on the line this post-season, the St. Louis Blues are desperate for a playoff series victory. If they fail to make it to the second round yet again, the team is sure to see a lot of changes in the offseason.
