NFL Draft Day 1 Recap; Ohio State’s Draft Party

NFL Draft Day 1 Recap

NFL Draft Day 1 Recap

The NFL draft kicked off on Thursday night in Chicago to the relief of NFL fans everywhere. Finally, we can throw out our mock drafts and stop trying to analyze everything we hear in the media because nine times out of ten, we’re wrong.

However, the draft began with two picks that we all probably did see coming. Jared Goff, from California, went to the Los Angeles Rams with the 1st overall pick and Carson Wentz, from North Dakota State, went to the Philadelphia Eagles with the second pick. After both teams traded up to get into the top two in recent weeks, the choice of two quarterbacks was no surprise.

After just two first round trades a year ago, there were five this year. The 3rd pick on was a complete toss up for the most part. Everyone knew Goff and Wentz would go 1-2, but after that anything could have happened. Well, a surprise is exactly what we got with the Chargers’ pick. They selected Joey Bosa from Ohio State. Is Joey Bosa one of the best players in this class? No doubt. Do the Chargers have more important needs than pass rusher? Maybe. Most people expected the Chargers to select an offensive tackle to protect Philip Rivers’ blind side. The Chargers apparently have other plans. There are still a few quality tackles on the board, so maybe we see one to the Chargers in round 2.

Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State had five players drafted in the top 20. Yes, you read that correctly. After Joey Bosa, Ezekiel Elliot came with the very next pick to the Cowboys. Eli Apple rounded out the top 10 when the New York Giants selected him 10th overall. Six picks later came Taylor Decker, to the Detroit Lions. Daron Lee was the fifth Buckeye taken in the first round, 20th overall to the New York Jets.

Ohio State dominated the first round and it is hard to remember that not them, but the Alabama Crimson Tide won the National Championship. Alabama, on the other hand, had only one player selected in the top 25 this year with center Ryan Kelly going to the Indianapolis Colts.

With Derrick Henry, Jarran Reed, A’Shawn Robinson, Reggie Ragland still on the board, look for Alabama to win round 2. Cyrus Jones, a good nickel corner with great return skills, can even possibly slip into the second round.

Key Stories

Laremy Tunsil, the guy we all expected to go in the top five, slipped to 13 where the Miami Dolphins selected him. 13 minutes prior to the draft, Tunsil’s Twitter was hacked and a video was released of him smoking with a bong. This wasn’t the only story, however. Screenshots of a text conversation between Tunsil and John Miller, assistant athletic director for football operations, were leaked and show Tunsil asking for rent money as well as money to cover his mother’s electric bill.

When asked about it, Tunsil said, “I made a mistake. That happened.” Asking if that meant he took money from an Ole Miss Coach, Tunsil said, “I’d have to say yeah.”

Tunsil was one of the top prospects to come out this year and we will have to see exactly what comes of this. Ole Miss will probably be in the spotlight more than Tunsil.

Already being pegged the steal of the first round, the Arizona Cardinals selected Robert Nkemdiche with the 29th overall pick. Once a lock as a top five pick, Nkemdiche fell on a lot of boards due to his off the field antics. If there is one thing we know, it’s that Bruce Arians welcomes these guys with open arms. In 2013, the Cardinals selected Tyrann Mathieu after falling in that draft due to drug problems. Today, Mathieu is one of the top free safeties in the NFL.  If Arians can get the best out of Nkemdiche, a defense with him, Patrick Peterson, Calais Campbell and Tyrann Mathieu can be dominant.

The defending Super Bowl Champion, Denver Broncos, selected Paxton Lynch after trading up to 26th overall to get him. With Mark Sanchez being the starter as of right now in Denver, I’m sure Broncos’ fans were excited about the pick. Lynch will be a huge project in the NFL, but has the physical talent to be something special in the league. The ideal situation would be Sanchez plays somewhat decent which will allow Lynch to sit and learn.

However, we all know after Sanchez throws his first pick of the year, fans will be screaming for Lynch in Mile High.
