Jalen Ramsey Suffers Apparent Knee Injury; Jaguars’ First Round Draft Pick
The Jacksonville Jaguars’ first round pick, Jalen Ramsey, suffered what has been diagnosed as a “small tear” in the meniscus. The Florida State secondary star is widely considered to be one of, if not the most talented players in this year’s draft class. He is seeking a second opinion and the timetable for his return has been given a wide window ranging from 4-6 weeks all the way up to 4-6 months. Still being in the infant stage, we will not immediately know exactly what kind of recovery the potential future star may be facing.
This comes as a huge blow to the Jaguars, just a year removed from losing 2015 first round pick Dante Fowler Jr. to an ACL tear in preseason. This team is a sexy pick as a sleeper playoff team in most expert circles. With a young and dynamic offense featuring Blake Bortles, coming off a 35 touchdown year in just his second season, and running back T.J. Yeldon, tight end Julius Thomas and wide receivers Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson, who just made his first Pro Bowl, the future looks bright for this team.
Last year’s Achilles heel for this team was the defense, but that was addressed this offseason with the acquisition of draft picks Ramsey and LB Myles Jack. The first and second round selections, along with the return of Fowler, were supposed to revamp this defense. The injury to Ramsey will temper expectations, but that doesn’t mean the Jags can’t still make a run at the playoffs, especially given the state of the division. The AFC South has been the least competitive for some time, so it should still be up for grabs this year.
The good news for Ramsey is that this was not a devastating injury. Often when a knee injury happens, it is obvious that it’s going to keep a player out for an extended amount of time. In this case, Ramsey felt soreness after practice and the injury was discovered via MRI.
He has two surgical options, which is where the recovery window comes from, but he will still seek another opinion before making any decisions. The early timing of the injury, as well as more than one medical option, should play into the favor of the Jags and still keep their potential future playoff hopes alive.
