Jalen Ramsey Right Knee Surgery Update; Could Return Before Regular Season

Jalen Ramsey Right Knee Surgery Update

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced last Thursday that Jalen Ramsey had undergone surgery for his right knee due to a meniscus tear in which he suffered during phase 2 of an offseason conditioning program last week. An MRI revealed the tear the following day.

The tear was described as being minor and Ramsey was expected to recover in as little as a month, depending on the location of the tear. A tear on the outside of the meniscus is considered a hard end and would have to be shaved down to prevent discomfort, but typically would get a player back on the field in 4 weeks time.

On Tuesday, the Jaguars announced that Ramsey’s knee surgery was a success, which had “required just a trim” according to NFL Networks’ Ian Rapoport and that “he is expected to return by training camp.” Ramsey had even undergone cartilage repair surgery on the medial side of his same knee as a player back in high school.

Despite Ramsey’s injury and indefinite timetable at the time, the Jaguars haven’t hesitated to sign him to a four-year deal worth $23.3 million with a $15.1 million signing bonus and made him an addition to the Jag’s second-straight year of signing a top draft pick who suffered an injury before the regular season. Dante Fowler Jr. had missed his rookie campaign after he tore his ACL last may, but was offered a contract days later and Fowler even missed the entire season.

Each of the player’s knee injuries occurred in May, four months before regular season action. Could the team be cursed? (I guess we’ll find out next year…)

Jalen’s condition is no good news for the Jaguars, who’s hopes of success lies on their promising three players, Fowler, Ramsey and Myles Jack, all who have knee concerns. However, his injury is simply not as harsh and it is unlikely that he will follow in the length of absence as Fowler.

Jalen Ramsey, who is 6-foot-6 and 209 pounds, is quite a strong press and is an important asset for the Jags, who would otherwise struggle to find a replacement in his absence should he miss a season. Pro Football Focus Steve Palazzolo referenced Ramsey as a “defensive chess piece” with “the tools to develop into one of the best press cornerbacks in the league.”

Training camp opens for the Jaguars in nine weeks, with their first preseason game scheduled for August 11th. The team will open the regular season with a home game against the Green Bay Packers on September 11, giving Jalen Ramsey plenty of time to get in good physical shape for this fall.
