Jacksonville Jaguars Draft Preview; 2016 Schedule Released
With the NFL Draft set to begin on April 28th, let’s take a look at this year’s Jacksonville Jaguars Draft Preview and schedule.
Jacksonville Jaguars Draft Preview
Top Needs: Cornerback, Center, Outside Linebacker, Guard
Draft Picks: Round 1 (5), Round 2 (38), Round 3 (69), Round 4 (103), Round 5 (146), Round 6 (181), (201), Round 7 (226)
The Jaguars made a huge splash in free agency signing a handful of big names to contracts. Malik Jackson, Tashaun Gipson, Chris Ivory and Prince Amukamara will all be immediate starters and should contribute nicely. However, there are still some positions that need to be addressed via the draft if this team wants to contend in 2016.
In the first round, a couple guys that can end being the pick are Jalen Ramsey out of Florida State and Myles Jack out of UCLA. While Ramsey is considered by many to be the best player in the draft, Jack is not far behind. If Ramsey goes in the top 3, then don’t be surprised at all to see Jack land in Jacksonville. The Jaguars desperately need a play making linebacker and all Jack does is make plays. He is the epitome of the new age linebacker boasting great speed and coverage skills as well.
The second round can bring more defense to this Jaguar team. A name to look out for is Leonard Floyd out of Georgia. After drafting a pass rusher last year in Dante Fowler, they can look to add another young versatile edge rusher in Floyd. We have yet to see what Fowler can bring to the table after suffering a torn ACL prior to his rookie season, but he was a top draft for a reason. A front seven with the likes of Malik Jackson, Dante Fowler, Leonard Floyd and Myles Jack can be downright scary. We know the Jaguars will put points on the board due to their emerging offense, but adding multiple defensive players in the draft can make this team one to look out for.
With the first couple rounds going to defense, expect the third and later rounds to be spent addressing the offensive line. There is a major need for a center, but the problem is there are not many quality centers available. The Jaguars could decide to go in the direction of Ryan Kelly in the second round instead of defense, but since we have them selecting Floyd already, a guy like Nick Martin out of Notre Dame can be the pick here. He is the second ranked center on most team’s boards after Kelly and can be a day one starter. He possesses very high football IQ and can identify defenses well, while leading the calls for the offensive line.
In the later rounds, a couple more positions the Jaguars can look to address are cornerback and guard. A later round corner to keep an eye on is Rashard Robinson out of LSU. He dealt with many off the field issues and was suspended by LSU coach Les Miles in 2014 and has not played organized football since. With all this being said, however, he is a tall, lanky, in your face corner that can be an asset to rebuilding defense.
As far as guards, a few names that can be late round options are Joe Dahl out of Washington State, Parker Ehinger out of Cincinnati and Denver Kirkland out of Arkansas.
