With week 1 of the NFL almost in the books it’s time to start crunching the numbers on who the best teams are. Week 2 though, reveals almost all you need to know about the rest of the season.
If you start 0-2 in the NFL, you have 12% chance of making the playoffs. The short football season is scary enough for many fans who have consistently watched their team go down the tubes practically before the season starts without knowing this fact. But now that it’s out in the open it’s kind of hard to look away from.
INTERESTING FACT: The last 3 times the New England Patriots started 0-1, they won the Super Bowl that year.

If you start 0-3 your chances drop precipitously. Only 3 teams have made the playoffs after starting the season 0-3; the ’92 Charger, the ’95 Lions, and the ’98 Bills are the only ones. Notice that there isn’t a team since then that’s done it. If you lose next week there isn’t a need to put away you’re football gear for another season quite yet. But if week 3 is another losing effort you may want to consider stamp collecting. I have heard it is both fun and rewarding!
Football fans are forever seeing the beer mug as half full though. Their plucky attitudes in Cleveland, Buffalo, and Los Angeles have brought fans back year after year despite these teams being known for ending their season right at week 17. No need to bother with those pesky playoffs when the fans come back year after year. Well, maybe not for the Rams now. But their still in their honeymoon period, so that will at least buy them a little more time.
The short NFL season always makes for some bitterly contested games at every turn, something that cannot be said for baseball or basketball all the time. But, in turn, your season can be over before October, and that makes for a real long winter.
