Orlando Magic Hire Frank Vogel; Spent Last 6 Seasons in Indiana
The Orlando Magic hire Frank Vogel as their new head coach. Indiana’s trash now becomes Orlando’s treasure. A week after Scott Skiles resigns, Orlando moved quickly to hire the suddenly available Frank Vogel.
The Memphis Grizzles made a strong case for Vogel, but in the end he chose the Magic. Frank Vogel was an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers, and Pacers prior to becoming a head coach in the NBA.
The Magic went 35-47 this year, but they increased their win total by 10 games and will look to take another step next season. The Pacers were 45-37 under Frank Vogel last season. Many expected the Knicks to make an offer for Vogel’s services, but Phil decided to go a different route.
Frank Vogel’s Time In Indiana
In Frank Vogel’s six full seasons as the Indiana Pacers’ head coach, his teams finished in the top six in field-goal percentage defense every year and in the top 10 in defensive efficiency every year.
Frank Vogel led the Pacers to the playoffs 5 of the 6 seasons he was their coach. The only season they didn’t make the playoffs, was because of the Paul George injury but even then, the Pacers only miss the playoffs because they lost the last game of the regular season. LeBron James will tell you, Vogel’s Pacers were arguably LeBron’s toughest challengers in the Eastern Conference.
Larry Bird felt the Pacers needed a new voice, so he didn’t want to renew Frank Vogel’s contract. Larry might regret this move down the road.
What’s Next for Frank Vogel and Orlando?
The Magic have an interesting offseason coming up. They traded away one of the better young scorers in the league in Tobias Harris at the trade deadline. Orlando is loaded with cap space. They can sign two max free agents. Orlando isn’t much of a free agent destination, but the idea of no state taxes, playing in a warm weather city and playing for a respected coach in Frank Vogel can change all of that.
Frank Vogel will have the Orlando Magics in the playoff hunt next season. Vogel’s track record of mentoring younger players will be key in the resurgence of the Orlando Magic.
