Miami Heat C Hassan Whiteside Will Re-Sign With the Heat
Free agent center Hassan Whiteside will be re-signing with the Miami Heat. The deal is expected to be for 4 years and approximately $98 million. The contract won’t be signed and official until July 7th.
Whiteside, who just recently turned 26, averaged 14.2 points and 11.8 rebounds per game last season. He also led the NBA in blocks last season at 3.7 per game.
Whiteside was originally a 2nd round pick of the Sacramento Kings in 2010 out of Marshall. He was out of the league for 2 seasons before establishing himself with the Heat as an elite NBA rim protecting center during the 2014-15 season.
He announced the deal via a post on The Players’ Tribune writing:
“I’ve played on eight teams since college — from Reno to Sioux Falls to Sichuan, China. I am not ready for there to be a ninth. I have decided to re-sign with Miami. I just wanted to take this time to tell all the fans how much you mean to this team, and to me. Can’t wait to get back to work and try to bring another championship to Miami. #HeatNation”
Considering the advanced age and uncertain futures of Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh, the Heat have invested in Whiteside to be a cornerstone of their franchise going forward. The Heat are also expected to have a meeting with free agent superstar Kevin Durant this weekend.
