Memphis Grizzlies Hire David Fizdale; Was Top Assistant For Miami Heat
Former Miami Heat assistant David Fizdale agreed to a four-year deal to become the head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies.
David Fizdale was the top assistant coach in Miami for several seasons, including the two championships during the LeBron era. Before Miami, David Fizdale was on the coaching staff in Golden State and Atlanta.
Memphis has been looking to replace Dave Joerger, who was fired earlier this month after three seasons. He was quickly scooped up by the Sacramento Kings. The Grizzlies made a strong push for Frank Vogel, but he ultimately took the Orlando Magic head coaching job.
The Grizzlies are giving an NBA assistant head coach, his first head coaching opportunity during an offseason when many other teams have hired NBA head coaching veterans such as Tom Thibodeau in Minnesota, Nate McMillan in Indiana and Frank Vogel in Orlando.
Coach Fizdale is a Great Hire
David Fizdale is a players coach. He can relate to young players and seasoned veterans. The Grizzlies have the NBA’s third-longest streak of making the playoffs. To continue that streak, it will take a coach who knows his players and spends that much more attention to detail.
David Fizdale has a strong reputation as being a film junkie and mastering the science of game preparation. If the Grizzlies’ core veterans can open up to a new voice, great things can happen in Memphis.
The Grizzlies will try extremely hard to re-sign Mike Conley this summer. If they can, the Grizzlies will boast a formidable lineup that includes Lance Stephenson, Tony Allen, Matt Barnes, Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph.
David Fizdale will have these vets motivated and ready for the 2016-2017 season. Many felt if the team was healthy during these playoffs, the Grizzlies would have presented a lot of matchup problems in the Western Conference.
