Bryce Dejean-Jones Fatally Shot in Dallas; Pelicans’ Guard Died at 23 Years Old
Everyday, people’s lives are taken away from us too soon. It was announced early on Saturday that New Orleans Pelicans’ guard Bryce Dejean-Jones fell victim to that cold reality after he accidentally entered the wrong apartment.
He was in Dallas on Saturday visiting his girlfriend and celebrating their daughter’s first birthday. After going on a walk by himself while his girlfriend and daughter were out, he returned home to find the door locked and no one answering. Puzzled – since he knew they had gotten home before him – he started to bang on the door and eventually, kicked it down.
After entering the apartment, in a Camden Belmont Apartment complex, Dejean-Jones called out to his girlfriend before kicking down the bedroom door. Up to that point, Dejean-Jones believed he was in his girlfriend’s apartment. However, he had mistakenly went to the wrong apartment. As he opened the bedroom door, the owner of the apartment — who was asleep — fired his handgun.
Explained by his agent, Scott Nichols, Dejean-Jones didn’t mean any harm in this incident:
“He went to the wrong apartment unfortunately and I think he thought his girlfriend locked him out, so he was knocking on the door, banging on the door, it’s locked. So one thing led to another,” said Nichols.
The first officers to respond to the scene had walked into Dejean-Jones “collapsed in an outdoor passageway.” After being brought to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, the 23-year-old had passed away.
As for the owner of the apartment that he broke into, no charges are being filed. According to Texas law, a resident is allowed to use deadly force in the event they have to protect themselves in their home. However, in order to use that deadly force, the resident can’t be provoking the attack or being doing anything illegal. As stated above, the resident was asleep when Dejean-Jones broke in.
Taken Too Soon
The team sent out a statement regarding the incident:
“It is with deep sadness that the Pelicans organization acknowledges the sudden passing of Bryce Dejean-Jones. We are devastated at the loss of this young man’s life who had such a promising future ahead of him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bryce’s family during this difficult time.”
Dejean-Jones was entering the turning point of his career, having just signed a three-year contract with the New Orleans Pelicans. He ended up playing in 14 games this season, starting 11 of those, before requiring surgery on a broken wrist. He originally joined the team on back-to-back 10-day contracts.
NBA Commissioner, Adam Silver, also weighed in on the tragedy that happened early Saturday:
“The NBA family mourns the tragic loss of New Orleans Pelicans guard Bryce Dejean-Jones. Bryce inspired countless people with his hard work and perseverance on his journey to the NBA, and he had a bright future in our league. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Bryce’s family and the entire Pelicans organization during this difficult time.”
Our thoughts and prayers go to the family of Bryce Dejean-Jones.
