Holly Holm’s Reign Comes to an End, Miesha Tate Takes Over

Just four months ago, Holly Holm stunned the UFC community when she defeated the un-touchable, Ronda Rousey. Miesha Tate, who has had trouble fighting Rousey in the past, came into this fight against Holm with a chip on her shoulder. One of two things could’ve happened: Miesha Tate takes the belt from Holm or Holm keeps the belt once more.

Miesha Tate, who previously hinted at retirement soon, takes the title from Holly Holm.

Entering the fifth round, this fight seemed to be Holm’s all the way. It was a battle for both fighters, but Holm held the advantage. However, Tate didn’t let that get to her. A little under two minutes into the fifth round, Miesha Tate got a good grip on Holm’s back. She then got her right arm under Holm’s chin and in a leap of desperation, flipped her to the ground.

Holm did not want to give up. Eventually, after refusing to tap, Holm went unconscious and the fight was called. Miesha Tate stunned the crowd with a rear-naked choke at 3:30 in the fifth round.

After the fight, Miesha stated:

“I feel we had a great game plan. She’s very dangerous. She’s capable of catching anyone at any moment. She’s a calculated fighter. I thought I had to be like a pit bull with a bone [with a choke]. I knew she wasn’t getting out of that one.”

Dana White, UFC president, commented on what he thinks will happen next. “I think that Ronda now will fight Miesha Tate for the title,” he said. “That’s what’s going to happen. That’s what I said before this fight even happened. Whoever wins tonight will fight Ronda for the title.”
