Sixers Contact Ben Simmons and Will Select Him With the No. 1 Overall Pick in This Year’s Draft
363 days into the year-long assumption that Ben Simmons out of LSU would be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft appears to be substantiated.
The Philadelphia 76ers have made news for the past three seasons of unprecedented futility, but somehow the first overall pick has managed to elude them until now. They hold the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NBA draft that will be held on Thursday night.
Simmons is seen as one of the best prospects to come out since LeBron James. He draws comparisons to King James because of his size and strength, while still being so versatile and athletic. In today’s ever-evolving NBA, his versatility to play multiple positions cannot be understated.
Simmons represents the true cornerstone piece that the Sixers have been coveting ever since former GM Sam Hinkie started the “process.”
For all the heat Hinkie took over the past three seasons, he knew what he was doing. Call it what you will, but tanking isn’t necessarily the worst way to rebuild a franchise. Philadelphia was a middling team that occasionally made the playoffs in a weak Eastern Conference that was never a real contender. Once Allen Iverson was gone, this team lacked a true leader and had no real direction.
The Point of Rebuilding
As a Sixers fan, I’d rather see them tank a few years to go from awful to legit contenders. It seems like a far better strategy than being on the fringe of mediocrity for years without ever acquiring the type of franchise-changing, young players that they have stockpiled over the past three drafts.
Making the playoffs frequently is great, but what good is sneaking in as the 7 or 8 seed only to lose in the first or second round? Is the point not to win the title? This seemed to be the pitfall of the Flyers for so many years under Bobby Clarke, trying to win every year even though it’s simply not in the cards sometimes.
Why sacrifice the future for a chance to be better this year if better doesn’t realistically mean a chance to win it all? Luckily the Flyers now have Hextall, who is a forward thinker and sees the big picture.
Although Hinkie may never get the credit he deserves, he did lay the foundation for the future of the Philadelphia 76ers we are about to see. Ben Simmons first overall, Dario Saric coming from Croatia, Joel Embiid POSSIBLY playing this season as he was cleared for light scrimmaging, and Nerlens Noel and Jahlil Okafor.
More than likely there is a trade or two coming, but I like the way the team is starting to look and I’m excited to see what the future holds.
