The Dallas Cowboys will lose their rookie third round draft pick for 10-12 weeks as he had surgery to repair a broken right foot. The rookie defensive tackle out of Nebraska suffered the injury during the team’s organized activities last week.

Injuries in general are unfortunate, but when they happen to rookies it hurts teams even more. It is tough enough to make the transition to the NFL from college, but now Collins’ development will be halted by injury. While a return later in mini camp is possible, it is more likely that he starts the season on the physically unable to perform list.

The Boys selected Collins in the third ¬†round , with the 67th overall pick, to try and help a very under achieving defensive front. The Cowboys will already be without Randy Gregory, Collins’ old teammate at Nebraska, for four games as he serves his suspension. DeMarcus Lawrence may also be looking at some suspension time, so this defensive front for the Cowboys will be in dire need of help anywhere they can get it.

Collins put up big numbers in his sophomore year playing alongside Gregory. He had 45 tackles with 13 tackles for a loss and 4.5 sacks. However, after the departure of Gregory, Collins only had 29 tackles with 7 tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks. The Cowboys are hoping to reunite the two and put up big numbers together.

“I think [Collins has] got the stuff to pass rush in there, to help us for matchups.”

If Collins is able to come in and provide some pressure up the middle, it is possible we see Tyrone Crawford slide down to defensive end to mix up the looks. With Jaylon Smith almost surely to miss time as well this season, the Cowboys defense will be looking for answers early in the season.
