Tyler Eifert Undergoing Left Ankle Surgery; Injured It Back In January

Cincinnati Bengals’ tight end Tyler Eifert undergoing left ankle surgery, which has yet to recover after his injury back in January. The injury caused him to leave the Pro Bowl in a walking boot.

Tyler attempted to stretch out to snag a touchdown throw from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ quarterback, James Winston, in the back of the endzone, but lost his momentum and went down to the ground. He later hobbled off to the sidelines where he was evaluated.

ESPN’s Coley Harvey reported that the Bengals expected Eifert back by April for team Tyler Eifert Undergoing Left Ankle Surgeryactivities, as Eifert was even participating in voluntary workouts, but it’s apparent thing’s hadn’t gone as planned.

Tyler Eifert is expected to be off the field for a few months following the “minimal procedure” — that has become necessary — and is expected to return in August, a month after the Bengals’ training camp begins. However, he should be back just before they hit the road for their first game of the regular season against the New York Jets in September.

Injury a Constant Issue

Eifert has endured several injuries in the past few years since his selection as No. 23 coming from the University of Notre Dame in the 2013 draft. In his first year, he missed a regular season finale due to a stinger. In 2014, he suffered a preseason shoulder injury and an elbow dislocation which caused him to miss the season after only a week of play and undergo surgery. In 2015, he suffered another stinger and a concussion, but had returned in time for the season finale and the playoffs.

This would make the second-straight offseason that Eifert will have spent recovering from an injury and undergoing surgery. However, the 25-year old has emerged as one of the league’s best at his position, following a career year in which he recorded 52 catches for 615 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Tyler Eifert is expected to have a bigger role for 2016, given his rapport with Andy Dalton. Although he’ll miss preseason training, he is expected to be physically fit come the first week as long as he can remain healthy during recovery.
