2016 Masters Tournament: Tiger Woods Won’t Play This Year

Tiger Woods announced on Friday that would he would not compete in the Masters this year. This will be the second consecutive Masters Tournament that Tiger Woods won’t play in.

The 4-time Masters Champion confirmed that he would not play at Augusta next week on his website, and refused to put a timetable on his return.

“After assessing the present condition of my back and consulting with my medical team, I’ve decided it’s prudent to miss this years Masters.” He said in a statement.

Tiger Woods has been out of competition for the last 7 months and has undergone surgery, as well as a follow-up procedure.

Just a few weeks after the Wyndham Championship in 2015, he had microdiscectomy surgery on his lower back–the same surgery he had back in March 2014, which caused him to miss the Masters that year.

During his rehabilitation, Woods posted blogs giving updates on his condition, which is also where the announcement was made that Tiger Woods won’t play.

On March 11th, he blogged: “Working hard on my short game at my outdoor practice facility and on my indoor Full Swing gold simulator. Still no timetable on my return, but I’m excited to get back out there with the guys.”

Tiger Woods Won't PlaySadly, his recovery isn’t happening soon enough and he’ll have to play the sidelines again.

Despite his condition, it hasn’t affected him from actively engaging in the sport.

“I’ve been hitting balls and training daily, but I’m not physically ready. I’ve said all along that this time I need to be cautious and do what’s best for my long-term health and career. Unfortunately, playing Augusta next week wouldn’t be the right decision. I’m absolutely making progress, and I’m really happy with how far I’ve come, but I still have no timetable to return to competitive golf.”

Woods also opened up about his feelings on not being able to return as soon as he’d like. “I’d like to express my appointment to Billy Payne, the Augusta National membership, staff, volunteers and patrons that I won’t be competing. It’s a very important and special week to me, and it’s upsetting to miss it. I do plan to attend the Champions Dinner and see alot of old friends.”

He goes on to express his appreciation to his fans. “I’d like to thank the fans for their concern and support. The last few years have been difficult, but I have the best fans anywhere, and I want them to know that.”

Although he has no intentions to show up to play, he won’t miss out on Master Champion Jordan Spieth’s texas barbeque which will be served at the Champions Dinner.
