New York Yankees’ first baseman, Mark Teixeira, has decided to return and play this season through the pain caused by a torn left cartilage in his right knee.

Texieira said that surgery to repair the injury would cost him the entire season and that he’d rather play and take the chance of making it worse, since he is undergoing cortisone injections to help with swelling and pain. He’s also been getting rest, treatment and injections of the cushioning lubricant Synvisc.

“If we want to fix the cartilage and clean it up, you have to have surgery. But we think that with the type of injury it is, we can get through the season without it,” Teixeira said. “You can play through the pain and the soreness, but when it locks up and it’s extreme pain and you can’t move your leg, that’s a problem.”

“If the inflammation goes down and the cartilage can kind of settle a little bit, then maybe it won’t lock up and I will be alright. That’s kind of what the lubricant does too. It helps it from locking up,” he continued.

Teixeira Making Return Despite SurgeryTeixeira is quite familiar with the surgery, having injuring his left knee back in December of 2007. After undergoing an arthroscopic procedure, he said that he’d experienced soreness for more than a year, but with proper management he was able to hit .308 with 33 home runs and 121 RBI’s for the Braves and Angels in 2008.

Teixeira’s season was cut short to 111 games due to a broken leg in 2015, but he managed to hit 31 home runs beforehand. Off to a slow start this season, batting .180 with three home runs and 12 RBI’s — he’s missed four games the last week of May with a stiff neck and left Friday’s game in Baltimore after complaining that his right knee “locked up”.

Mark was placed on the DL on Saturday and met with a medical team on Monday. He believes that he won’t be limited when he returns, but that his knee condition will influence his availability.

“If it swells up after a game, maybe take the next game off,” he said. “I am not going to try to be a hero because we know we are not just dealing with soreness here. You deal with soreness. Were dealing with, you know, a structural problem. We just have to try to keep the swelling down and keep the pain out of it.”

Teixeira is in the final season of his eight-year, $180 million contract, but has said that he hopes to play more seasons.
