It was an incident that baseball players try to avoid, yet sometimes it is inevitable. Ryan Vogelsong, a pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, was the victim of one of those incidents during the Pirates’ Monday outing against the Colorado Rockies.

Vogelsong was at the plate with the bases loaded, facing an 0-2 count against Rockies’ pitcher Jordan Lyles. The next pitch was a 92-mph fastball. However, Lyles must’ve lost track of the pitch because as soon as it left his hand, it started to rise up. Without enough time to dodge the fastball headed for his face, Vogelsong ferociously took the ball to the left eye.

After contact, Vogelsong immediately fell to the ground and held his face in agony. Pittsburgh Pirates’ medical and training staff was quick to the scene as they tried to calm Vogelsong down and get him stood up. After laying on the ground for a few minutes, he was helped up and walked to cart. He rode off with medical staff covering his left eye with a towel.

Pirates Win It For Vogelsong

The incident happened in the bottom of the second inning. Prior to the at-bat, he had pitched two scoreless innings and only allowed two hits — striking out two batters, as well. He has appeared in 12 games this season, with this game being just his second start of the season. With a 1-1 record and a 3.74 ERA in 21.2 innings this season, Vogelsong has

struck out 16 batters. Most of his appearances this season have been 1- or 2-inning stints.

After Vogelsong was carted off, the Pirates chose Wilfredo Boscan to replace him on the mound. Boscan ended up getting the victory in this one, pitching for 4 innings and allowing 2 hits, 2 earned runs and one walk. The Pirates ended up using four pitchers after Boscan, ending with Melancon getting the save after a 0.2-inning performance. The Pirates ultimately beat the Rockies 6-3. They scored 4 runs in the bottom of the third inning, one inning after Vogelsong was hit by Lyles’ pitch.

What’s Next?

As for Vogelsong, he was immediately admitted to Allegheny General Hospital with what the team announced as a “injury to his left eye, including the orbital bone.” On Tuesday morning, the morning after the incident, the Pirates announced that Vogelsong had been placed on the 15-day DL due to facial fractures.

The team also announced that RHP A.J. Schugel will be taking Vogelsong’s spot on the roster until he is free of injury. Schugel was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis. He has appeared in 11 games this season, pitching 16.1 innings with a 4.96 ERA, 17 strikeouts and one save.

The Pittsburgh Pirates open up a 3-game series vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks today at 4:05 PM PT. They have won their past two series, winning¬†the Rockies’ series 2-1 and the Atlanta Braves’ series before that 3-1.
