Conor McGregor vs Nate Diaz Rematch Scheduled for UFC 202
Conor McGregor will return to the octagon for a rematch between Nate Diaz at UFC 202.
The MMA world has been in a frenzy since UFC 196 happened and Nate Diaz handed Conor his first UFC defeat. The rematch was scheduled for UFC 200, but that fight was scratched after McGregor refused to fly to Las Vegas from Iceland for promotional work.
The UFC hoped to book Diaz against another opponent for UFC 200, but Diaz made it clear that he was only interested in fighting McGregor.
After some time apart, UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta and UFC President Dana White recently traveled to meet with both McGregor and Diaz to hammer out a deal. Now it’s official all ,sides have agreed to a rematch on August 20th. Considering both men are in line to make a lot of money, i’m sure coming to terms wasn’t as hard as UFC officials would make it seem. The rematch could possibly outsell their first encounter at UFC 196 in terms of PPV sales.
In their first encounter, McGregor dominated early on. However, Diaz made him tap out in the second round with a rear -naked choke. Ever since, McGregor has been clamoring for a rematch. The Diaz rematch may or may not take place at 170 pounds. McGregor is the current 145-pound featherweight champion and Diaz is a longtime 155-pound lightweight — so, 170 seems unnecessarily high this time around.
Conor McGregor can now worry about Nate Diaz and not Floyd Mayweather. Conor doesn’t want to lose again to Nate Diaz. A second consecutive loss would kill off any box office momentum, even if Conor McGregor is still the UFC Featherweight Champion. McGregor is taking this rematch extremely seriously. With around-the-clock training and limited press events, Conor is looking to return to his rightful spot at the UFC food chain.
Now that the main event for UFC 202 is set, expect other matches to be announced soon to further fill out the fight card.
