The Chicago Cubs have released veteran outfielder Shane Victorino from his minor league contract. The Cubs currently have the best record in baseball and much of that can be attributed to the outfield depth they have on their current roster, and in their farm system. It would have taken a number of catastrophic injuries in order for Victorino to spend time with the big league club this season — which is certainly possible given the tough luck history of the Cubs.

However, to this point in the Cubs’ season, the only catastrophe has been the loss of Kyle Schwarber. Matt Szczur has emerged as an outstanding bat off the bench, further lessening the need for Victorino’s services.

Szczur appears to have secured the job of 4th outfielder with the Cubs going forward. In 38 plate appearances he’s batting .353 with 10 RBI and a .980 OPS. By comparison Victorino had 34 plate appearances with Triple A Iowa, where he hit just .233 with a .690 OPS.

Victorino is 35 years old and it is currently unknown if he will catch on with another club this season or choose to retire. Back in Spring Training, he was certainly aware his playing days could be numbered as he told FOX Sports, “I am my hardest critic. So if I feel like I am done nobody would need to make that decision for me.”

If Victorino is indeed done, he’s done with a career to be proud of as a two-time all star and 4-time gold glove award winner. He also won World Series Championships with the Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox.

True to his nickname, the Flyin’ Hawaiian stole 231 bases in his career and twice led the league in triples.
