Champions League Group Stage Draws: Barcelona to Face Manchester City, Bayern Same Group with Atletico, PSG Takes on Arsenal, Real Madrid Gets Dortmund, and More
Pep Guardiola, Claudio Bravo, and Yaya Toure will return to face their former club, as Manchester City draws Barcelona in the 2016/17 Champions League Group Stage Draws. The two sides have met twice in the round of 16 in last three seasons, although this will be their first meeting in group stage.
Guardiola will return to a team where he spent 17 years as a player and five years as a coach, enjoying numerous success and titles. In addition, Chile international goalkeeper Claudio Bravo just left the team today to join Man City. The group will also feature Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach and Scottish champions Celtic in what will be known as group C.
Atletico and Bayern Munich, who faced each other in last season’s semi final match up, will meet again in group stage as they were drawn together in group D. The group will also feature Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven, who played against Atletico in the round of 16 fixture last season — and debutants FC Rostov from Russia.
Defending champions’ Real Madrid get to play Borussia Dortmund, a team who they have played up to six times in this competition in the last four years in group F. Current European player of the year, Cristiano Ronaldo, will have a chance to return to his former home as the group features Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon, a club where he spent six years of his teenage life before making a move to Manchester. The last member of this group are Polish champions Legia Warsaw, who will hope to bring few surprises to this competition.
Group H seems to be another tough group as 2015/16 runners-up and Italian champions Juventus are drawn with three consecutive Europa League winners Sevilla, whom they were also drawn with in last season’s group stage. They will be with French side Lyon, who have few players that can trouble any defense — and Dinamo Zagreb, Croatian champions.
French champions PSG get to be with English side Arsenal, which sets up an exciting match up between the two in group A. Swiss champions FC Basel and Bulgarian champions Ludogorets Razgrad will also face off. Also, English champions Leicester City, also debutants in this competition, will get a chance to continue their fairy tale story from last season as they are in a comfortable group which features Portuguese side FC Porto, Belgian champions Club Brugge and Danish champions FC Copenhagen.
These are all the groups for 2016/17 UEFA Champions League:
The group stage will kick off on Tuesday, September 13th.
