DeShaun Watson or DeShone Kizer: Bears Have Decisions to Make
If you were left with a choice between DeShaun Watson or DeShone Kizer, who would you choose?
The Chicago Bears have officially hit rock bottom after another embarrassing loss to a sub-par opponent in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Not only did they move to 2-7 on the season, but they lost two pro bowl players in guard Kyle Long and receiver Alshon Jeffery.
Long will miss the remainder of the season with an ankle injury and Jeffery will serve a 4 game suspension for substance abuse. After a promising win over a good Minnesota Viking team last Monday night, the Bears looked to be turning the corner on a disappointing season thus far.
However, as long as snow falls in the windy city, Jay Cutler will continue to be a mediocre at best quarterback in the NFL. While we cannot pin all the blame on Cutler for the 36-10 loss to the Buccaneers Sunday, he sure can be held accountable for most of it.
Anyone who throws a pick 6 to Chris Conte needs to be questioned.
Sitting at 2-7 on the season now, it is becoming more and more apparent that the Bears will possess a top 10 draft pick come next May. That is a given. What is not a given is what position they decide to go for and who the name is.
The Bears have needs across the board, but none arguably as blaring as quarterback. It is simply time to move on from the Cutler debacle. It is absolutely insane that he is making similar money to Matt Ryan and Drew Brees. Trading for a quarterback may be an option, but the team’s best bet is to draft a young quarterback for the future.
This year, there are two quarterbacks above everyone else: DeShaun Watson and DeShone Kizer.
DeShaun Watson is the star Junior quarterback for the Clemson Tigers.
He was considered a Heisman favorite heading into this season, but that was prior to Lamar Jackson of Louisville scoring touchdowns at a rate unknown to man.
Nonetheless, Watson has great talent at the QB position.
He shows flashes of looking like he can suit up for an NFL team next Sunday. On the other hand, he makes some plays that just leave you scratching your head. Due to this year’s quarterback class not being one to remember, however, Watson is surely to go high in the draft.
His ability to win both on his feet and with his arm make him ready for today’s NFL. He can be a redzone nightmare for teams due his ability to carry the ball. He escapes pressure well and shows tremendous accuracy on the run. If Watson can learn to read defenses better post snap, he can be a very successful signal caller at the next level.
DeShone Kizer is another star junior quarterback for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Kizer surprisingly started this year as a backup on the Fighting Irish behind Malik Zaire. After Zaire struggled in a game against Texas, Kizer was brought in and almost led a thrilling come back, but came up a little short.
He was named the starter after that and hasn’t looked back. Kizer has prototypical size at the position at 6’4”, 230 pounds. He has a big arm and much like Watson, can make plays with his legs just as well as his arm. He shows great touch on deep balls and good intermediate accuracy as well.
He can stand in the pocket and make all the throws with the best of them, but can scramble as well and make something out of nothing with ease.
Kizer is looking more and more to be the first quarterback off the board in this years draft.
The Bears are awful, but the Cleveland Browns are still in the NFL so they will almost certainly get the number 1 overall pick in the draft. The San Francisco 49ers also are having troubles putting numbers in the W column. Both of these teams have needs at quarterback. The Browns, however, also have needs at every other position on an NFL football team.
This can leave the Bears somewhere in the 3rd-7th overall pick depending on how the rest of the season plays out. Don’t be surprised to see both Watson and Kizer gone in that frame. The question then becomes if the Bears will draft a quarterback in the first round for the first time since Rex Grossman in 2003.
The Bears’ defense has gone through a complete rebuild and it may be time for the offense to do so as well and that begins with drafting Jay Cutler’s replacement.
DeShaun or DeShone can both be that guy.
