In the latest of trading jabs with each other before they even (if they even) get in the ring, Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Saturday said he is “Coming out of retirement just to fight Conor McGregor.
While in England during a publicity tour, Mayweather insisted for “everyone to take their phone out” so they could “record this.” He then went on to tell the crowd that as of today he is officially out of retirement to fight UFC phenom McGregor.
He went on to say they can get a fight together soon, and specifically said June would be the time to fight.
“Sign the paper with the UFC so you can fight me in June. Simple and plain, let’s fight in June.” – Floyd Mayweather
The two superstars have long been hyping up a possible fight. Mayweather, in the video posted to Fighthype.com, said of McGregor, when he first began to call him out, “I don’t even know who the f*** that is.”
Since then, though, “Money” said he has watched tape of McGregor and is fully confident that at 40 years old he can beat the 28-year-old-challenger.
Any talks have been stalled as of late, not necessarily by terms of how or where they would fight, but by money. McGregor believes he should earn as much as Mayweather. Mayweather gave credence to why he should not.
“When I faced Arturo Gatti, I went to his turf. He was the A side. I was the B side. I beat him. I didn’t cry. I didn’t complain. When I faced Oscar De La Hoya, he was the A side and I was the B side. I didn’t cry. I didn’t complain. I beat him and I became the A side.” – Floyd Mayweather
Since beating De La Hoya, he has won 11 more fights, all of which have been at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. He last fought in 2015.
At 49-0, Floyd would risk a perfect boxing record if they were to fight. He would also most likely have to fight in an other state than Nevada, something he has not done since 2005, when he TKO’d Sharmba Mitchell in Portland, Oregon.
Will McGregor and Mayweather Ever Fight?
McGregor is only licensed to box in the state of California. So other than clearance from Dana White and the UFC, and agreement on money, there would still be further negotiations before a fight takes place.
When all this started in 2016 the Mayweather camp saw it as a joke. They issued statements that called it “a game” for McGregor to generate more fans, according to ESPN. They also added that “He would get his ass beat from pillar to post.”
Now that Mayweather himself is calling McGregor out, perhaps the framework for an actual fight is being put in place. Then again, he dragged out a possible fight with Manny Pacquiao for years, only to fight an older, slower Pac Man.
If they do box, Mayweather should easily win. For all his faults, Mayweather will be remembered as one of the greatest boxers of all time. The defensive style he has mastered as allowed longevity making his opponents chase him around, instead of trading blows to the head with them. He walks out of most fights unscratched.
McGregor, as an unexperienced boxer, would get frustrated and unsuccessfully chase Mayweather, until Mayweather, through decades worth of experience in the sport, would find the right time to strike and knock him down.
He would have his hands full against McGregor in the octagon, but McGregor is in way over his head in the ring with Mayweather.
If they ever go in the ring at all.
